Generation Plan MLM Software

A generation plan is an MLM compensation structure that pays commissions by generation rather than by simple level, where a new generation begins each time a downline member reaches a qualifying rank. MLM.ERP generation MLM software tracks rank breaks, compresses generations, and calculates generation overrides automatically so leadership income is paid accurately every cycle.

Who is the Generation Plan best for?

Established direct-selling companies with a rank ladder that want to reward leaders for developing other leaders.

How it works

The Generation plan in 5 steps

  1. 1

Members earn personal and group volume from product sales in their organisation.

  2. 2

When a downline member reaches a qualifying rank, they break away and start a new generation.

  3. 3

Each leader earns a set percentage on the group volume of each generation below them.

  4. 4

Generation depth unlocks with the leader’s own rank, for example 3 generations at Silver and 6 at Diamond.

  5. 5

The engine recalculates rank breaks every cycle and pays overrides to the wallet.

Income types

How distributors earn in a Generation plan

Every income type below is configurable in MLM.ERP: rates, levels, caps and qualification rules.

Generation override

A percentage of the group volume of each qualifying generation, with rates that can decline by depth.

Personal group bonus

A percentage on the leader’s own group volume up to the first rank break.

Leadership pool

A share of company volume divided among members at top ranks, if configured.

Rank advancement reward

A one-time reward when a member qualifies for a higher rank for the first time.

Worked example

See the numbers in action

A Gold leader has three downline leaders who each reached the qualifying rank, creating three generations. Generation 1 has 4,000 points of group volume, generation 2 has 2,500 and generation 3 has 1,500. With override rates of 5%, 4% and 3%, the leader earns 200 + 100 + 45 = 345 points in generation overrides, on top of any personal group bonus.

Declining override rates

Set a separate percentage for each generation and adjust it without redeploying software.

Dynamic compression

Skip inactive or unqualified members so overrides roll up to the next eligible leader.

Leadership dashboards

Leaders see group volume, generation counts and rank progress in one view.

Override audit trail

Every generation payout links back to the volume and rank snapshot used to calculate it.

Pros & considerations

Is the Generation plan right for you?

Why companies choose it

  • Rewards mentoring and leadership development, not only recruitment.
  • Encourages long-term retention of experienced distributors.
  • Scales well for large organisations with many depth levels.
  • Pairs naturally with rank and reward programmes.

What to design carefully

  • Rank-break logic is complex; members need clear documentation to trust their payouts.
  • Generation depth and override rates must be modelled carefully to protect margins.
  • Rank qualifications should depend on real customer sales, not self-purchased inventory loading.

Generation plan: common questions

Ask a question
What is the difference between a generation plan and a level plan?

A level plan pays a percentage on each fixed level below you, regardless of rank. A generation plan groups the downline by leaders: a new generation starts whenever someone reaches a qualifying rank. This means a single generation can span many levels, rewarding leaders who develop other leaders rather than just depth.

What is a rank break in generation MLM?

A rank break happens when a downline member achieves the rank that defines a generation. Their organisation stops counting toward your first generation and becomes your second. MLM.ERP detects rank breaks automatically at each cycle and stores a snapshot, so you can see exactly why a payout was split the way it was.

What is compression in a generation plan?

Compression removes inactive or unqualified members from the calculation, so volume rolls up to the next eligible leader instead of being lost. It keeps payouts fair to active members. In MLM.ERP you can enable dynamic compression and define what counts as active, such as minimum personal volume.

Is a generation plan suitable for small startups?

It can work, but it shines when you already have a defined rank ladder and enough depth for leaders to emerge. Many startups begin with a unilevel or binary plan and add generation overrides later. MLM.ERP lets you add a generation bonus to an existing plan without migrating members.
