Stair Step Plan MLM Software

A stair step plan, often called stair step breakaway, is an MLM compensation structure where members climb steps based on personal and group volume, each step paying a higher discount percentage, until they break away as independent leaders. MLM.ERP stair step MLM software calculates differential commissions, tracks step qualification and pays breakaway overrides automatically.

Who is the Stair Step Plan best for?

Product companies with healthy margins that want to reward high-volume distributors and leaders.

How it works

The Stair Step plan in 5 steps

  1. 1

Admin defines steps, for example 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25%, each with a volume threshold.

  2. 2

Members reach a step based on their personal plus group volume in the qualifying period.

  3. 3

Each member earns the difference between their step percentage and their downline’s step percentage.

  4. 4

When a downline member reaches the top step, they break away into their own leadership group.

  5. 5

The former upline then earns a smaller override on the breakaway group’s volume.

Income types

How distributors earn in a Stair Step plan

Every income type below is configurable in MLM.ERP: rates, levels, caps and qualification rules.

Differential bonus

Your step percentage minus your downline member’s step percentage, applied to their group volume.

Breakaway override

A fixed percentage on the volume of each leader who has broken away, often over several generations.

Retail margin

Profit from selling products to customers at retail price.

Step advancement bonus

A one-time reward when a member reaches a new step for the first time.

Worked example

See the numbers in action

A member sits on the 20% step and has a downline member on the 10% step whose group generated 3,000 points this month. The member earns the 10% differential, or 300 points, on that group’s volume. When the downline member later reaches the 25% top step and breaks away, the member instead earns a 4% override, 120 points on the same 3,000 points, while the new leader manages their own group.

Pros & considerations

Is the Stair Step plan right for you?

Why companies choose it

  • Strongly rewards sales performance and volume growth.
  • Breakaway creates clear leadership milestones.
  • Differential maths keeps total payout predictable at each step.
  • A long track record in established direct-selling companies.

What to design carefully

  • Breakaway can feel like losing income; explain overrides clearly during onboarding.
  • High volume thresholds can tempt inventory loading; add customer-sale requirements and buy-back policies.
  • The calculation is more complex than a level plan, so members need transparent statements.

FAQ

Stair Step plan: common questions

Ask a question
What is a breakaway in a stair step MLM plan?

A breakaway happens when a downline member reaches the top step. Their group is separated from yours for differential purposes, and you earn a smaller override on their volume instead. This is designed to reward you for developing a leader while they gain independence.

How is the differential bonus calculated?

Take your step percentage, subtract the step percentage of the downline member, and apply the difference to their group volume. If you are at 20% and they are at 10%, you earn 10% on their group’s volume. MLM.ERP repeats this calculation across the whole tree automatically.

Is a stair step plan good for beginners?

It can be motivating, because each step offers a clear goal and higher discount. However, the maths is harder to explain than a level plan. Many companies pair stair step income with a simple fast-start bonus so new members earn something while learning the system.

Do members have to requalify for steps every month?

That is your choice. Some plans make steps permanent once reached, while others require requalification each month or quarter. MLM.ERP supports both and can apply a grace period before demotion, which keeps the plan fair during seasonal dips.
